WESTBURY & DISTRICTS HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Over the last fifteen years we, as a group, have been involved in the following activities:
Functions such as:-
- Five Tasmanian Family and Local History Faires providing a forum and display area for groups from throughout the state and from the mainland
- slide nights,
- valuations,
- reunion dinner for ex-concert members,
- forum for past sporting groups,
- Australia day exhibition for the whole of the council district resulting the book In the Blink of an Eye,
- held working bees to make our present headquarters habitable and liased with the Rotary Club to assist in lining garage etc]
- attended workshops at QV museum [oral history , conservation of collection]
- hosted workshop run by roving curators
- hosted other history groups for lunch and tours,
- visited other history groups,
- attended conferences state wide and presented papers,
- provided guided tours for bus and walking groups
- published numerous books and provided suitable book launches for same
- successfully applied for grants such as eHeritage and MVC
- had “show and tell” evenings
- visited properties of historical interest
- entered teams in local trivia competitions
- worked with UTAS and overseas students on a project
- provided a research service for the public
- accumulated an extensive collection of photographs and information
- provided guest speakers to local organizations
- assisted with council records
- designed and built display stands
- developed our own web site
- formulated plans for a building upgrade and worked with MVC on these
- assisted in providing information for self guided walking tours of town, time capsule and information notice boards
- powerpoint presentations at fairs and special evening
- provided displays for other organizations [ Westbury Show, Tasmanian Writers week at Woolmers, Harveydale Rodeo, St Patricks Day]
- provided advice and information to groups such as Westbury Working Together [parade of champions, silhouette trail,]
- manned rooms for visitors to town to acquaint themselves with local history
- provided informed comment on radio
- published newsletters
